Horn Report is a political risk advisory and regional think tank dedicated to analysing security, governance, and geopolitical developments in the Horn of Africa. We combine rigorous, evidence-based research with locally grounded perspectives to produce timely insights for policymakers, organisations, and global audiences seeking to understand the region’s evolving strategic landscape.

Our mission is to curate and amplify local narratives, provide context-driven analysis, and support the development of a new generation of regional thinkers. Through analytical publications, policy briefs, workshops, and collaborative projects, Horn Report works to strengthen regional dialogue, promote stability, and enhance understanding of the Horn of Africa’s role in international affairs.

Role Description

The Horn Report Emerging Analyst position is a part-time unpaid opportunity designed for university students and early-career professionals eager to build practical skills in political risk, national security, and global affairs. While the core position is volunteer-based, analyst may have the opportunity to work on commissioned projects through our partners.

As a talent-oriented organisation, Horn Report provides an environment where emerging analyst can deepen their understanding of geopolitical dynamics, learn how to conduct structured risk assessments, and engage with real-world security and governance challenges in the region. The role also strengthens writing and communication skills through hands-on editorial support, enabling participants to produce concise, evidence-based reports and policy briefs for publication on the Horn Report platform.

Qualifications and Skills

We are especially interested in local voices from the Horn of Africa—analytical thinkers who want to help shape the region’s narrative on the global stage. Ideal candidates include:
• Academic Background: Individuals who have completed or are currently enrolled in undergraduate or postgraduate studies in fields such as political science, international relations, security studies, public policy, economics, development, or related disciplines.
• Professional Experience: Early-career professionals, researchers, civil servants, NGO staff, or practitioners working in governance, security, development, humanitarian affairs, or regional policy. Internship experience or involvement in policy-oriented organisations is also valued.
• Language Skills: Proficiency in English is essential. Knowledge of regional languages is a significant advantage for research grounded in local perspectives.
• Analytical & Writing Skills: Demonstrated ability to write clearly, think critically, and engage with complex policy or geopolitical issues. Experience writing essays, policy briefs, research papers, or analytical op-eds is highly desirable.
• Regional Insight: An understanding of political, security, economic, or social dynamics in the Horn of Africa, either through lived experience, academic study, or professional exposure.
• Initiative & Curiosity: Individuals who are eager to learn, explore ideas, conduct research, and contribute meaningfully to public discourse.

Hiring Process

Step 1 – Application:

Submit your CV (maximum 2 pages) along with a 200–300 word proposal outlining a potential article or brief. The proposal should focus on a political, security, or economic issue relevant to the Horn of Africa and demonstrate your ability to frame a clear, compelling idea.

Step 2 – Meeting:

Candidates whose applications are shortlisted will be invited for a brief virtual meeting to discuss their interests, background, and potential contribution before final selection.
