Education and Young People Engagement Associate

United Nations Volunteers - East and Southern Africa
Nairobi, KE Full Time Posted 1 week ago

Job Description

UNICEF works globally to promote and protect the rights of every child. Through its programmes, UNICEF supports governments and partners to ensure that children and young people access quality education, develop skills, and reach their full potential, especially those most disadvantaged.

In Kenya, UNICEF is working to expand access to inclusive, equitable, and quality education, particularly for children in arid and semi-arid counties, informal settlements, and refugee-hosting areas. With over 770,000 refugees and asylum seekers—many of them school-aged—there is growing demand for education services. At the same time, challenges such as poverty, climate shocks, disability, and early pregnancy continue to drive high numbers of out-of-school children. UNICEF’s programmes—including PROSPECTS, Education in Emergencies (EiE), Inclusive Education, and Adolescent Development and Participation (ADAP)—aim to address these gaps and strengthen systems for learning and youth engagement.

The Education and Young People Engagement Associate (National UN Volunteer – Associate) provides time-bound programme and coordination support to UNICEF Kenya in Nairobi. The role focuses on strengthening youth engagement, supporting education programme implementation, and enhancing data management and coordination across refugee and host community contexts.

Key Responsibilities

1. Youth Engagement & Participation
• Facilitate structured engagement of refugee and host-community youth, ensuring their voices inform programme design and coordination processes.
• Support adolescent participation initiatives and contribute to strengthening national guidelines and tools for youth engagement.

2. Programme Implementation & Coordination
• Support implementation of education programmes across PROSPECTS, EiE, and inclusive education portfolios.
• Assist in coordinating activities such as teacher trainings, community mobilization, school verification, and monitoring visits.
• Participate in field missions and contribute to documentation of findings and lessons learned.

3. Monitoring, Data Management & Reporting
• Support routine data collection, cleaning, and organization from schools and partners.
• Contribute to tracking programme progress and preparing reporting inputs.
• Assist in maintaining datasets and strengthening information management systems.

4. Knowledge Management & Communication
• Document best practices, lessons learned, and programme results across education and youth initiatives.
• Support preparation of briefs, presentations, and knowledge products.
• Contribute to communication materials highlighting programme impact.

5. Coordination & Partnerships
